European Maritime Day will in Brest-France 24-25 May

The 2023 edition of the European Maritime Day will take place in Brest, France, on 24-25 May as physical event, at Brest Expo – Parc de Penfeld.

The European Maritime Day (EMD) is the annual two-day event during which Europe’s maritime community meet to network, discuss and outline joint action on maritime affairs and sustainable blue economy.

The EMD is the place where ‘Ocean Leaders Meet’. It provides an engaging and completely interactive experience to catch up on the current state of play on a broad range of issues concerning the blue economy and the marine environment and to discuss ways of moving forward.

Esprit de Velox, alongside with Euro-Argo ERIC, EuroFleets, European Global Ocean Observing System EuroGOOS and IFREMER, organizes the Workshop “Sustainable ocean observation, from open sea to coast: shared responsibilities” that will take place on 25/05/2023 at 14.30 – 15.45 CET.

In the face of climate change and loss of biodiversity, for which the ocean is steering the future of the planet, ocean observation from open sea to coast is key to preserving the Ocean as a common good of humanity, and to deliver the European Green Deal. Faced with this injunction and this ambition, today European ocean observing is not sustainable, lacks coordination and support and its trajectory is not convergent with the greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2050. Indeed, by relying on marine research infrastructures and observing networks, mostly financed from research resources by member countries with a maritime coastline, the obvious progress made in recent years cannot satisfy the needs for exponential growth and profound technological refoundation.

Coordinated and optimised for efficiency, cost and intrinsic environmental footprint, ocean observation from open sea to coast is paramount for sustained and reliable provision of oceanographic services and information. This workshop will discuss how the ocean observing stakeholders are consolidating efforts to limit the duplication and promote long-term coordination and sustainability. We will discuss the challenges we face and solutions our communities offer in delivering a common ocean observation strategy.

Speakers :
Catherine Chabaud (European Parliament); Andreea Strachinescu (European Commission DG MARE); Jean-Marie Flaud (Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, France); Inga Lips (EOOS/EuroGOOS); Toste Tanhua (GOOS); Yann-Herve De Roeck (Euro-Argo ERIC); Niamh Flavin (EuroFleets); Francois Frey (Esprit de Velox); Lucie Cocquempot (Ifremer); Ghada El Serafy (EuroGOOS); Moderator: Kate Larkin (EMODnet)

François Frey (president) and Patrick Farcy (administrator) will be Esprit de Velox’ voices during EMD exhibition, alongside the conference: the ideal place for stakeholders to meet, exchange experience and discuss the programme’s latest developments (booth information to follow).
